New Wireless Technology
6/15/2009Options come in virtual and true configurations. Connectivity is via IR, RF, Bluetooth, USB, or traditional RCA and 3.5mm jacks.
Manufacturers of 5.1ch headphones in mainland China and Taiwan are holding off from active mass production, pending a more encouraging response from this high-end line`s target markets.
Product development, in particular, is limited for makers on the mainland due to low demand. The increasing popularity of home theater systems has yet to effect parallel development in the 5.1ch headphone segment, prompting makers to target other applications such as video games and PCs. Two types of 5.1ch headphones are being produced in mainland China: virtual 5.1ch surround and true 5.1ch. These support infrared (IR), RF or USB connectivity.
In contrast, Taiwan makers are optimistic that home theater systems will spur the growth of the 5.1ch headphone line, with video game application as another industry driver. However, most interviewed suppliers still consider 5.1ch headphones a minor line, accounting for less than 20 percent of their total headphone output due to high production cost. Instead, these makers focus development on stereo headphones and wireless models supporting IR, RF 2.4GHz or Bluetooth technology.
To minimize cost, mainland China makers conduct production in-house, while Taiwan makers maintain most of their factories on the mainland. The major hubs for the headphone industry on the mainland are the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions.
